Chris Wilder and Middlesbrough FC have wrapped up their goalkeeper moves ahead of the upcoming promotion push. Last week Middlesbrough loaned out Joe Lumley, Sol Brynn, and Zach Hemming and signed Liam Roberts as the no 2 keeper [link to article].
Now, Middlesbrough has found their new first-choice keeper for the season, as American international Zack Steffen is set to sign a loan deal for the remainder of the season. Steffen has struggled to find playtime at the Etihad making only 21 appearances in the past two seasons.
Steffen remains a valuable member of Team USA, having started 12 matches for the club in the same span. This move will hopefully work out for both sides, as Steffen will look to impress Team USA boss Gregg Berhalter ahead of the 2022 World Cup. For Middlesbrough, they get a keeper who was the undisputed number one keeper not too long ago for Team USA and Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Boro will undoubtedly hope that Steffen can strengthen its overhauled keeper department, which finished with the 8th worst save percentage in the Championship last season.
